The following is taken from the presentation by Felicity White Brand Ambassador for Macallan,
The Macallan Diamonds Are Forever55th anniversary release is so much more than just a spirit, it’s a narrative. It’s got layersand complexity, just like the film in which it was inspired by. The whisky inside was distilled all the way back in 2007, a little wink to 007 himself, but also giving us a whisky that’s been matured for 18 years up at Macallan Estates in Scotland.
And like any good Bond story, there’s a twist. So, we’ve used a unique combination of cast types to craft this whisky, a marriage of sherry and red wine seasoned American and European oak. That red wine cask is particularly unique for us at Macallan and adds another layer of sophistication to this whisky.

But it’s also, again, a reflection of James Bond’s knowledge of red wine in particular. In the film, we see Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint attempt to assassinate Bond for the third time.

And it’s Bond’s knowledge of red wine in particular that ultimately saves his life in that moment. Within the film as well, there’s a common theme of not everything is quite as it seems. We see a fake moon landing, we see doppelgängers and clones and fake fingertips and we wanted to reflect this idea that not everything is quite as it seems within the whisky as well. And that’s where those hybrid casks come in.

So, this is a combination of both American and European oak staves that come together to create one unique single cask. From your American oak, you can expect a fine sweetness of vanilla, honeys, butterscotch, fresh fruit notes, lots of stone fruits and orchard fruits in Macallan, perhaps more exotic notes of coconut as well. From your European oak, the European oak brings richer, darker flavours.

That’s where you get your dry fruits, your dark chocolates, more orange citrus, more wood spice and more cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, things like that. And these hybrid casks add another layer of depth, but also perhaps an unexpected character to the whiskey that you have in your glass as well.
So, a little bit like James Bond himself, this whiskey holds secrets. And while you may look at it and it looks very kind of dark and mysterious if you look at that wonderful natural colour within your glass, on the palate it surprises with elegance and lightness.

So, all of these casks that we have hand selected to craft this whiskey really add another layer to that story. It’s representative of kind of the twists and turns that we see within the film as well. But also a testament to the shared spirit of innovation that connects the Macallan and James Bond.

So, what is the result of that? I encourage you to first of all nose your whiskey. For me, on the nose, I get polished oaks and vanilla bean. I encourage you then to also try your whiskey. Bear in mind that it’s 45.5% alcohol by volume.
But then for me, it’s followed by a kind of smooth layered caramel and cocoa dusted champagne truffles with rich red fruits on the palate. And then to finish, it’s long and elegant and lingering. A little bit like the closing scene of a classic Bond adventure, leaving you in a state of mystery and satisfaction. – Felicity White
